Lake District, Cumbria
A slate house at the water’s edge, with the fells all around
Welcome to Grasmere
A Victorian slate house on the shore, with its own boathouse and jetty. A tasting menu worth the drive, a lake-view spa, and walks that start at the back door.
A tasting menu of the valley: lake fish, Herdwick lamb, wild herbs.
Row out at dawn, or take the launch across for a picnic.
A hydrotherapy pool looking straight down the lake.

The story
A Manchester mill owner built the house in 1860 as a summer retreat, and his rowing boats are still in the boathouse. The gardens run down to the water through rhododendrons and old oaks.
Our chef forages on the fells and fishes the lake, and the menu reads like a map of the valley.
Eat and drink
Twelve seats at the pass and twenty-eight in the dining room, with the lake beyond. Eight courses of the valley.

Spa
A hydrotherapy pool with the lake at the end of it, a sauna built of larch, and cold-water swimming from the jetty for the brave.
